CoFED's Fall Newsletter
We hope you had a great summer and are looking forward to this Fall!
CoFED had the joy of spending our summer with eight impressive campus teams selected to join CoFED's Summer Learning Institute to grow their start-up and scale-up business ideas for community-owned food systems!
During this nine-day intensive, teams developed their leadership and business skills to build cooperatively-run food enterprises to build a more just world. Teams joined us from Colorado State University, Evergreen State College, Howard University, Temple University, University of Delaware, U.C. Los Angeles, U.C. Santa Barbara, and University of West Virginia. As one student shared, "It was one of the best weeks I've ever experienced. This was the most inspiring, intelligent, and passionate group of people I have ever been around." Another student spoke to the value of CoFED stating, "CoFED is the only cooperative developer that spoke specifically to University and student led initiatives while addressing social justice aspects, as well as, a focus on young people contributing to this movement." "It was a transformative week."
It was our favorite week of the summer, too.
See why in this mini-documentary about CoFED's 2015 Summer Institute:
CoFED is excited to build on the work of this summer to create a flourishing Fall! We will continue to support the campus teams from our Summer Institute, engage with the broader network and CoFED community, and introduce more offerings to our community. Here are a few new things we are doing at CoFED and ways you, your friends, or family can support community-owned food systems:
Buying books? Use Amazon for your purchases?
If you do, CoFED can receive a percentage of the sale at no additional cost to you! We created an infographic to show you just how easy it is to do.
NEW Equity Toolkit for Food Co-ops!
CoFED's toolkit provides a guiding framework for how to grow cooperatively-run food enterprises to be more equitable—so that everyone, particularly low-income communities and communities of color can benefit from community-owned food systems.

As we grow our work and impact we want to thank all of the students and campus teams working to change the food system, the economic warriors who build resiliency through the cooperative model, and the community of support that makes this work possible. You help make us who we are. In fact, our Summer Institute would not have happened without the generous support of our community. The CoFED Oakland Running Festival Team enabled us to offer scholarships, the gracious food donations supported delicious meals, and our foundation partners turned the idea of the Summer Learning Institute into a reality.
Thank you to all of our sustainers and donors who make this work possible!
As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."
Thanks for dreaming with us,
P.S. Thanks again to all of our Summer Institute supporters!
