The Shakedown Café is a student founded and managed restaurant and community space serving delicious, locally sourced meals that are both environmentally and socially sustainable in a venue of art, music and creative energy. The Shakedown was founded on the belief that people must be connected to the food they eat. Food is about choices and with those choices comes power. To that end, The Shakedown is dedicated to the mission of educating our community about food issues and empowering ourselves to make change.
Emphasizing the importance of conscious consumption and ethical business practices, The Shakedown is committed to supporting local farms & vendors and promoting alternative marketplaces & means of production. The Shakedown is committed to fostering an active and inclusive community that promotes self-expression, discussion, education and empowerment for Pitzer students, faculty, staff and community members.
They were started by group of 5 undergrads in 2007 when a chinese restaurant that was on campus left. 1000 students attend Pitzer, which most of them live on campus. In 2014, they moved into a newly-renovated space with full commercial kitchen capacity. A group of 12 co-managers run the restaurant and each have a shift a week, where some 50 shift-volunteers come to help.
